When Can Baby Sleep Through the Night? (Realistic Expectations by Age)

At some point in the newborn haze, usually around the 15th consecutive night of waking every two hours, someone asks you: "Is the baby sleeping through the night yet?"
It's a question designed to make you feel behind. But the honest answer is more complicated than yes or no — because what "sleeping through the night" means at 6 weeks is completely different from what it means at 6 months.
Here's what you actually need to know: what's developmentally realistic at each age, what you can do to help, and what you simply have to wait for.
What "Sleeping Through the Night" Actually Means
First, a myth to dispel: sleeping through the night does not mean 10–12 unbroken hours from the moment you put your baby down.
For infants, the clinical definition used by sleep researchers is typically 5 continuous hours of sleep — often from midnight to 5 AM. Some experts use a 6-hour benchmark. Neither of these is what most parents imagine when they ask the question.
Full 10–12-hour nights don't become realistic for most babies until closer to 6–9 months, and for many, even later. And even then, "sleeping through" usually means 1–2 brief wakings that your baby handles without needing you — not a flatline on the monitor from 7 PM to 7 AM.
Understanding this calibrates your expectations so you're not counting yourself as a failure at 3 months for having a baby who still wakes twice.
0–3 Months: Not Yet — And That's Normal
In the first three months, your baby is not developmentally capable of sleeping through the night, and attempting to change that is both unnecessary and inadvisable.
What's happening biologically:
- Newborn stomachs are tiny — roughly the size of a cherry at birth and a walnut by week one. They genuinely cannot hold enough calories to sustain 8+ hours of sleep.

- Make nights boring and days stimulating (lots of light, activity, interaction during the day; minimal stimulation for night feeds)

4–6 Months: The Transition Point
This is the age when sleep gets complicated — and also the age when you have the most leverage.
What's happening at 4 months:
At around 3.5–4 months, your baby's sleep architecture permanently changes. Their sleep cycles mature to look more like adult sleep — with defined stages, including deeper periods of non-REM sleep and lighter periods of REM. This is good news for sleep depth. The complication is that these transitions between sleep stages produce brief awakenings, and if your baby learned to fall asleep in your arms, at the breast, or with a pacifier, they'll now call for that prop at every cycle transition.
This is the 4-month sleep regression — and it's not a regression in the sense of going backwards temporarily. It's a permanent change in how your baby sleeps.
What's realistic at 4–6 months:
- A healthy, typically developing baby at 5 months who has learned to fall asleep independently can often achieve 6–8 hour stretches, sometimes longer
- Most babies this age still need 1–2 genuine night feeds (discuss with your pediatrician based on weight and growth)
- Babies who haven't learned to fall asleep independently will typically wake every 45–60 minutes — not from hunger, but from the sleep cycle transitions
What you can do:
- This is the earliest age most experts recommend formal sleep training for healthy, full-term babies
- Focus on the skill of falling asleep independently at bedtime — this is the single change that most dramatically improves night sleep
- Move feedings to earlier in the bedtime routine so nursing or bottle is not the last step before sleep
- Establish a consistent bedtime routine if you haven't already
What to wait for: If your baby is under 4 months, wait. If you have any concerns about weight gain or nutrition, talk to your pediatrician before reducing night feeds.
6–9 Months: Developmentally Ready for Independent Sleep
By 6 months, most healthy babies have the developmental and nutritional capacity to sleep 10–12 hours with 0–1 night wakings.
What's happening biologically:
- Caloric density of feeds has typically increased (solids are starting or about to start, formula intake is higher, breastfed babies are feeding more efficiently)
- The stomach can now hold enough calories during the day to sustain the night
- Sleep architecture is mature enough to support consolidated sleep if the conditions are right
What's realistic:
- A 7-month-old who can fall asleep independently at bedtime: often 10–11 continuous hours, with possible one brief waking
- A 7-month-old who still needs nursing or rocking to sleep: likely still waking every 45–90 minutes all night
What you can do:

9–12 Months: Long Nights Are Possible — With a Complication
By 9–12 months, most babies are neurologically and physically capable of sleeping 11–12 hours at night.
The complication at this age: separation anxiety peaks.
Around 8–10 months, babies develop a mature understanding of object permanence — they know you exist even when you're not in the room, and they strongly prefer your presence. This is normal and healthy, but it makes sleep harder and sleep training more emotionally complicated for parents (and somewhat more difficult for babies).

- 9–12 month olds who learned independent sleep skills earlier: typically sleeping 10–12 hours with 0–1 brief wakings
- 9–12 month olds who haven't learned independent sleep skills: may be entering a more difficult phase as separation anxiety intensifies
What you can do:
- If you haven't sleep trained and want to, it's still effective at this age — just expect more vocal protest and a slightly longer adjustment period (sometimes 7–10 nights instead of 3–5)
- Lean into secure attachment during the day: lots of physical closeness, responsive interaction, object permanence games (peekaboo, hiding toys under blankets) help build the understanding that you come back
- Keep bedtime calm and predictable; avoid rushed, anxious drop-offs in the crib
- Consider a "goodbye" script — the same words every night — so your baby knows the routine
What to wait for: Separation anxiety will ease over the following months. In the meantime, responsive, consistent sleep practices matter more than which specific method you use.
Developmental Readiness vs. Sleep Training Readiness
There's an important distinction between "can my baby sleep through the night" (developmental readiness) and "should I start sleep training" (sleep training readiness).
Developmental readiness is mostly about age and biology:
- Under 4 months: not developmentally ready for consolidated sleep
- 4–6 months: transitional — beginning to be capable, but benefit from gentle introduction
- 6+ months: fully capable of consolidated sleep if they have the skills
Sleep training readiness is about the whole picture:
- Your baby's health and weight (check with your pediatrician)

Many families have a developmentally ready baby at 6 months but aren't in the right window for sleep training until 7 or 8 months because of other circumstances. That's fine — developmental readiness doesn't expire.
What You Can Do at Any Age
Regardless of where your baby is developmentally, a few things support sleep at every stage:

Not at all — it's wonderful. Some babies naturally consolidate early. Enjoy it, and don't feel like you need to wake them (unless your pediatrician has instructed otherwise due to weight concerns). Just know that the 4-month regression may temporarily disrupt it around 3.5–4 months.
My doctor says my 5-month-old doesn't need to eat at night, but they're still waking 4 times. Why?
Almost certainly because of sleep associations. If your baby can't fall asleep independently at bedtime, they'll need help returning to sleep at every cycle transition — regardless of whether they're hungry. Your doctor is right that the wakings aren't nutritional; they're behavioral. This is the time to work on drowsy-but-awake and independent sleep onset.

Define "didn't work." If you tried for 1–2 nights and stopped, that's not enough time — the process typically takes 5–10 nights. Is it harmful to let my baby cry during sleep training?
